Order, May 21, 1863, assigning Captain Adam Badeau to General Grant's staff. Telegram, April 21, 1864, to Dr. John P. Gray in Utica, asking if Gray can act as commissioner to investigate the sanity of Lorenzo Stewart. Note on back signed by Gray stating that he will do so. Letter to Dr. John P. Gray, April 26, 1864, stating he has enclosed the commission from the President to investigate the case of Private Lorenzo Stewart. Letter, Sept. 4, 1867, to Andrew Boyd in New York City, states he is sending copies of orders issued by the Adj. Gen. Office re: Lincoln's funeral, as requested.

Edward Davis Townsend (August 22, 1817 – May 10, 1893) was Adjutant General of the United States Army from 1869 to 1880. The son of David S. & Eliza (Gerry) Townsend and grandson of Vice President Elbridge Gerry, Townsend was educated at Boston's Latin School before graduating from the United States Military Academy in 1837.
